Clothes that are “dry clean only” are the worst. The absolute worst.
Maybe I’m alone in this, but I’m the type of girl who’s prone to spills. Most days I end up rushing to the laundry room, whipping out the Shout spray, and throwing my shirt in a super hot, heavy load, bleach-filled washing cycle. So, you can imagine why I avoid all clothing with “dry clean only” on the tag.
It takes too long. There’s too much involved. By the time I get to the dry cleaners the shirt will probably be outdated anyways, so I always choose regular, washable clothing.
A few weeks ago, my grandma was in town visiting. We were feeding my son and watching him scarf down pizza.
I had taken his shirt off ahead of time (I’ve watched my son eat pizza before. I knew what was coming.) but by the time he was finished he had red pizza sauce all over. His hands, his face, his chest – it was everywhere! But that didn’t surprise me.
What surprised me was the comment my grandma made as we cleaned him up. She started wringing out the washcloth and chuckled at my son’s cute little messy face and said, “It’s a good thing God made us washable.”
I sat there stunned at the truth behind what she said. I sat there are thought about all the times I’ve messed up where God has picked me up, dusted me off, and given me a completely clean slate. I thought about how stinky we’d be if God had labeled us “dry clean only”.
Aren’t we lucky to have a God who loves us enough that He made us washable? Not only physically washable but also, through Christ, washable on the inside?
I may be the only one prone to spills, but I know I’m not the only one prone to sin. Unfortunately, we all are. And sin leaves more than just a stain.
It leaves regret.
It leaves shame.
It leaves guilt.
We might not be able to get those things out with Shout spray or bleach, but we can be free from them through Christ.
“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT
“And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.” Romans 8:2 NLT
Every time we’ve spilled – that affair, that addiction, that lie, that pride – God has looked at us with loving kindness and forgiven us. He sees no stain. He sees no sin. He sent His own son to die on the cross and took care of that…forever.
“…I am He who wipes the slate clean and erases your wrongdoing. I will not call to mind your sins anymore.” Isaiah 43:25 The Voice
Friend, I am here to remind you that you too are washable. We all are.
Live in that freedom today and walk like you’re washable – light, free, and full of thanksgiving towards the God that has claimed you His own.
“…no matter how deep the stain of your sins, I can take it out and make you as clean as freshly fallen snow…” Isaiah 1:18 TLB
